With the return to on-campus learning, the student council has been able to resume regular meetings and we are working hard to improve the lives of all students. Despite the obstacles that the pandemic has placed in front of us, we have still been able to make effective changes and look forward to the year ahead.
One of the first major but necessary changes was the implementation of new roles within the student council. For those unaware, the positions of Prefect, Chief Executive, and DIBE coordinator have all been added in place of the Treasurer and Secretary. The Prefect’s focus is to provide an objective and more direct line of communication between the teachers and student council. The Chief Executive serves the combined role of Treasurer and Secretary. The DIBE coordinator stands for Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Equity and is in charge of ensuring the promotion of these ideals at school.
Within our weekly meetings, we have discussed a variety of topics such as school policy changes and event planning. For example, we have worked with the administration to place female hygiene products in the female bathrooms in order to promote a more safe and comfortable environment for our students. We are currently looking forward to a variety of activities for the holiday season, and will be decorating the school in the coming weeks to prepare.
Aside from the preparations for the holiday season, we are also working on a variety of other initiatives. For example, we are looking to create a grade 11/12 lounge so that our IB students have a dedicated space where they can relax, interact, and work. In addition, we are trying to plan numerous events that aim to bring the student body closer together despite the divides that we have experienced throughout the pandemic.
We remain dedicated to promoting student wellbeing in all its forms. To achieve this, we will begin sending out a student newsletter accompanied by a student feedback form. This will allow us to directly communicate with the student body and hear their feedback so that we can effectively address it in a timely manner.
Overall, we are excited to be back and have a great deal of plans to strengthen the community and improve well being at the school.
Regards,
The AAS Student Council
