On June 17 we hosted our first astronomy night at the school. Middle and high school students along with teachers were invited to attend.
The Astronomy Club crew arrived early at the AAS campus, greeted by raging thunderstorms and a heavily overcast sky. With optimism driven by the weather forecasts and their passion for astronomy, the crew decided that cancelling was not an option and went forward with their first astronomy night. The first guests arrived early while there was still light rain outside. However, that presented them with the unique opportunity of learning about the setup procedures involved in making an astronomy night possible. As dusk fell, the crew’s optimism was rewarded with clear skies and bright stars. The event featured hands-on night sky observation and a guided tour of the stars with live views from the telescopes. The guests were exposed to many aspects of astronomy, from the assembly of a telescope to the formation of craters on the moon. The members of the Astronomy Club had just as many teaching opportunities as learning opportunities on this night which shall set a precedent for future events.
