After a long time of virtual learning, Grade 10 students are finally back on campus. This is a great opportunity for some hands-on work in Chemistry class.
Last week the students performed an experiment where they had a small piece of calcium reacting with water. One of the products formed is hydrogen gas. The aim of the experiment was to find the relationship between the mass of calcium and the volume of hydrogen gas formed. The evidence of the presence of hydrogen gas was proven by the so-called pop-test; a small flame is used to ignite the gas which results in a “pop” -sound.
