Last week Grade 7 students had quite a fun and dynamic History class.
Ms. Hoffman had created a game to help them understand better the concept of Feudalism.
The class was divided into different groups – peasants, lords, and knights. There was also a king, who had his throne and some snacks, provided by his loyal subjects.
Then, each lord had to present him/herself in front of the king and pledge his/her loyalty. In the meantime, the peasants were working on the field, to gather enough food and pay taxes to their lords. Forts were built and negotiations with knights took place, so each fort could have their own defender. In the end, there was a war and some of the forts fell, as they were not very well protected.
During the final discussion the students shared how they felt playing their respective roles. We are sure that ‘walking a mile in the shoes’ of Medieval people, helped seventh graders learn while having fun.
