Welcome New Families!
Welcome From the Director

Dear Families,
It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the Anglo-American School of Sofia (AAS). I have been at AAS for eight years, five years as the Elementary School Principal and three years as the Director. My wife is a PreK-12 Curriculum Coordinator, two of our three children are currently students here, and our eldest graduated last year.
Probably like me, the first thing you will notice at AAS is the beautiful purpose built campus, providing all the essential academic and recreational facilities. Set at the base of Mt. Vitosha, AAS is a splendid place to work and learn. As much as the campus is stunning, it is the welcoming community that sets AAS apart. I am confident that you will find the staff, students, and other AAS families to be friendly and supportive. Seeing the new friendships develop each year is delightful.
In the classroom, we strive to meet each student where he/she/they is, and to help each grow and succeed in every sense. Outside the classroom, AAS provides many opportunities for students to engage in fun and challenging activities and athletics. In academics, athletics, and activities, our students consistently perform better than their peers at other schools across the world.
Transitioning to a new school can be exciting and stressful. It is natural to wonder if the new school will be a good fit for your child; if your child will make friends; if your child will like his or her teacher. AAS has a robust transitioning program in place to support you and your child, and we will do everything we can to support your family through this phase. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
I hope you have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to welcoming you to AAS in August.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tim Fries

The Importance of Family and Home
September 29, 2023The internet is a wonderful place for mining quotations. Last week, I came across this pearl of wisdom in a Rand Corporation Publication. “ … research suggests that, compared with teachers, individual and family characteristics may have four to eight times the impact on student achievement…” Mind you, the Rand Corporation is an ultra-conservative American...

September 21, 2023“Give the students something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.” – John Dewey Today, the Middle and High School students will return from the Cultural Trips. September 8, 2023I have to admit that when the time comes around for me to submit a blog post, I get a bit anxious. I struggle with trying to find something to write about that I think students, parents, and staff could relate to or even want to read. With the beginning of the new school year...
