PTO in the Spotlight: Radostina Rashkova

This week we introduce Radostina Rashkova, PTO President and a mom of two beautiful girls.

Introduce yourself using three words only, please.
Positive, organized, empathetic

How did you decide to choose AAS for the education of your child, and how has your perception of the school evolved since then?
We choose AAS because of the community and the bond that the children have here. The opportunities that are provided by the school to learn not only from the teachers but from their older peers, which, in our opinion, is what helps children develop in every aspect. AAS is like one big family and that makes the kids feel safe, comfortable and willing to learn. In the meantime they benefit from the wide range of amenities and activities that the campus here has to offer.

What motivated you to join the PTO and take an active role in the school’s community?
I like to give back and be involved in the community and as a school volunteer. I’d also like to think I’m setting a good example about the importance of both education and citizenship to my children. And last but not least in my experience, happy teachers make for happy children. So at the end of the day, I’m motivated to stay involved because I’m making my child’s school experience better.

What are some upcoming initiatives that the PTO is currently planning?
We have a Turkish professor visiting AAS today to lecture the Middle and High school kids in Artificial Intelligence. He will also be hosting an afternoon lecture for AAS parents, companies and anyone who is interested. We will have an Easter egg hunt with the whole school next Monday and a Bake sale on Tuesday. We also started preparing for the annual International Fair that will be held on June 22.

What opportunities are available for parents to volunteer and contribute to the PTO’s efforts?
I think the sky’s the limit here. As long as there is desire, there is always something to help the PTO out with . Parents can contribute to various activities, such as organizing fundraisers, attending meetings, managing after-school programs, taking field trips, and arranging movie nights. Besides being actively involved, the PTO would also want to hear the parents’ voices – we would like parents to share their opinions about PTO initiatives, budget allocation and so on. So everyone is more than welcome to join the PTO in a way that they are comfortable with and contribute with their expertise in an area they are strong in. Because when you are doing what you are good at and think is fun, volunteering becomes more enjoyable.

Why do you think other parents should get involved in the PTO’s activities? What is the biggest benefit of joining the PTO?
I believe that we should all give back to our society in order to build the best possible place for our children to grow. The biggest benefit is the smiles on the faces of each and everyone of our children. That’s why there is no better place to get involved in and see the benefits from that from the PTO.

It’s an immense joy to see you with your two young helpers serving at events. How do you manage to balance your responsibilities within the PTO with your role as a mother? What’s your secret?
My secret is the secret of AAS – community. I have a great team to help me and everyone in school – from directors to administration to students – are so happy and helpful when they see us around. So there’s always an extra pair of hands helping out, even if they are small. I won’t lie and tell you that it’s easy because it’s not. But it’s definitely worth it and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
