Staying Active During Distance Learning

Entering another period of online learning brings back the challenges that go hand in hand with it – more screen time, more time spent sitting, less physical activity, less time spent outdoors, more stress and less opportunities for fun and leisure activities. So what better time than now to remind ourselves of some of the benefits of physical activity.

Physical activity is not only essential for healthy growth and development, but also important to learning. Research shows that physical activity of any kind – team sport, biking, hiking, swimming or playground games – has positive effects on the brain and on school performance. According to research from the University of North Texas, maintaining a healthy body may be “one of the most important factors” in determining a student’s success in math and reading. The research outlines that exercise affects the executive functioning of the brain by increasing neurotrophins (neurotrophins help the survival of neurons in areas responsible for learning, memory and higher thinking), increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain and increasing brain neurotransmitters.

Another thing physical activity is really good at is reducing stress. When stress affects the brain, with its many nerve connections, the rest of the body feels the impact as well. So if your body feels better, so does your mind. Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins – chemicals in the brain that act as natural painkillers – and also improve the ability to sleep, which reduces stress. Research shows that regular participation in aerobic exercise decreases the overall levels of tension, elevates and stabilizes mood, improves sleep and improves self-esteem.

Last but not least, physical activity helps maintain a healthy body weight and prevent obesity, which is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases. Physical activity can help build healthy bone mass and density, which will reduce the risk of developing bone-related diseases. Physical activity helps the development of fundamental motor skills, improves posture, helps maintain good cardiovascular health and more.

Don’t postpone today’s workout for tomorrow. Start your day with a workout, mobility routine, yoga or a different activity of your liking and reap the benefits of physical activity.

Stay Active!
