Studying for the International Baccalaureate is known to be a rigorous challenge for any student, but it also serves as excellent preparation for academic life beyond high school.
One example of this is the independent study project. For those taking the full diploma, the Extended Essay is a 4,000-word research paper completely of their own choosing. With some guidance and supervision, they establish their focus, carry out extensive research, take copious notes, and write their paper according to established guidelines.
Fortunately, the focus can – and should – be of personal interest, so for many, the level of engagement is inherent in their chosen topic. Furthermore, the process provides practice for research and writing in tertiary education, giving our students a head start and a chance to develop those skills in advance.
This week’s Silver Tray Ceremony was a celebration of the hard work that went into this over the last year. Research projects crossed all subject areas, from Music to Mathematics, and we are proud of the achievements of all our students.
